Ten-man Wallidan sink Biko

Friday, February 29, 2008
Wallidan beat arch rivals Steve Biko 1-0 in their last night encounter at the Independence Stadium, Bakau. George Cole’s 37th minute goal, that emanated from a spot-kick, aided the Blue Boys to land the whole three points and in effect start the league campaign in a bright mood.

Steve Biko dictated the pace of yesterday’s match, but Wallidan, who were reduced to ten men in the second interval, did capitalise on their chance.

Biko had the most scoring chances and the situation turned sour for the Blue Boys when striker Amadou Gai was redcarded in the seventy-three minutes.

Despite their numerical advantage, however, the Bakau side could not find the back of the net.

In a post-match interview with Observer Sports,  Wallidan coach Foday Bah said: “I’m not please with the performance of the my team, but it’s the three points that matter.”

“We have always lost our first league match. So winning the first match today is fascinating.”

His counterpart Abdoulie Bojang believes his side deserve a point, but were punished for their failure to capitalise on their chances.

“It was a game where we deserve at least a point. We have numerous scoring chances in both intervals but we did not capitalise,” rued coach Bojang.
