Brampton Bryan Leintwardine Cricket Club from Herefordshire, England, are presently in the country as the guests of the Gambia Cricket Association.
The visiting club have been engaged in series of activities since their arrival on Monday, November 10. The British cricketers, in collaboration with their Gambia counterparts, last Tuesday held a cricket clinic at the July 22nd Square in Banjul where over 200 Lower Basic students, drawn from 8 Lower Basic schools within Banjul and Greater Banjul Areas, were exposed to the basic techniques of the game, including bowling, batting and fielding.
On Wednesday, the British team emerged winners in a friendly match against the Gambian side.
The visitors first batted and scored 121 runs in 32 overs all out, as opposed to Gambia’s 103 runs in 23 overs. The visitors eventually won the match by 18 runs.
Having trained the Upper Basic School kids, the two parties will run another cricket clinic today (Friday), this time, for students from the Senior Secondary Schools.
Mr Johnny Gomez, the president of the Gambia Cricket Association revealed that his association is making good use of the school system to revive a sport that remains dormant in the country after making great headlines decades back.
