It’s common for companies to come forward and lend a hand when Gambian national team’s are set to participate in major international competitions but when it comes to national league competitions, it is the football association that bears the brunt of the spending.
An insider at the football association, lamented that the First Division League competition has been going on for the past years without a sponsor, noting that the situation is a great concern to the national football governing body.
“Before we set the ball rolling for a new season, we want to sort out certain things. And one of them is the need to get vibrant sponsors for the league title - something we have not had for a long time now. It’s the football association that has been sponsoring the national league for the past years and this is not in the best interest of the game.”
“The football association cannot do it alone. We need the support of the various institutions just like it’s the case in other footballing countries. For the national league to be competitive, we need to have vibrant sponsors, ” he said.
The 2008 league season is tentatively scheduled to commence next month and clubs have already embarked on their traditional pre-season training as part their preparations.
