BOTSWANA-ZIMBABWE: Botswana to close its Harare embassy

GABORONE Friday, December 05, 2008 (IRIN) - Botswana will close its embassy in the Zimbabwean capital, Harare, within the next few weeks a senior diplomat told IRIN. It was unclear whether Botswana's decision to close its diplomatic mission in Harare would also lead to the severing of diplomatic ties with President Robert Mugabe's government, but the decision comes a few weeks after the country's foreign minister called on the region to isolate Zimbabwe. Botswana's foreign minister, Phandu...

Botswana suggests neighbors close borders with Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's neighbors should close their borders in an attempt to bring down President Robert Mugabe, Botswana's foreign minister said Wednesday in the strongest call yet for action from Africa. The leaders should "tell Mugabe to his face, 'Look, now you are on your own, we are switching off, we are closing your borders,' and I don't think he would last. If no petrol went in for a week, he can't last," Skelemani said.

Republic of Botswana - New Vice President, Cabinet and Appointments in the Civil Service

In addition Parliament overwhelmingly endorsed the nomination of Lt. Gen. Mompati Merafhe as the new Vice President. H.H. Vice President Merafhe has previously served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. For the convenient reference of interested stakeholders, the following are consolidated listings of 1)...

BOTSWANA: Safari operators alleviating AIDS crisis

Small charter planes fly tourists from all over the world to safari camps in Botswana's Okavango Delta, where they view wildlife by day and pay up to US$1,000 a night to stay in luxury lodges or rough it in five-star tents. The safari camps are mainly expatriate owned and managed, but guests are waited on, cooked for and guided through the bush by people from Maun, the largest town in the district and the gateway to the Okavango. After the government, safari camp operators are the biggest...

SOUTHERN AFRICA: A winning recipe for PMTCT but few follow it

A success story, at last: Botswana has lowered the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV to less than four percent, coming close to developed countries that have almost eliminated paediatric AIDS. In Europe and the USA, fewer than two percent of babies with HIV-positive mothers are born with the virus; without intervention, the risk of an HIV-positive pregnant woman passing on the virus to her baby is between 30 percent and 35 percent, according to health specialists. In Lesotho,...

SOUTHERN AFRICA: The effect of migration on HIV rates

Trying to measure the impact of the Zimbabwean exodus on HIV/AIDS rates in the region is so fraught with ifs, buts and maybes that the only reasonable assumption is that, like other migrants, economic migrants may run a higher risk of infection than they would have if they had not left their homes. The scale of Zimbabwean migration to neighbouring states is disputed, with estimates ranging from more than three million people to a few hundred thousand, making an overall assessment of the...
