SOUTH KOREAN INVESTOR MEETS PRESIDENT JAMMEH

Professor Allhajie Yahya Jammeh, the President of the Republic of The Gambia, on Friday received at State House Dr Hae Jung Jung, Chairman and founder of MK International Incorporation, a renowned investment firm based in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr Hae, whose visit is in response to the Gambian leader’s invitation to explore business opportunities in the country, is expected to start investment in the country early next year. He was at State House to make a Power Point presentation on diverse areas of investments.

The South Korean investor, whose company started operation in 1981, is engaged in different areas of business investment such as industrial engineering for small and medium scale projects, manufacturing activities, international trading on general import and export, as well as the technology of air shipping of containers, amongst others.

Speaking at a meeting held at the cabinet room, professor Jammeh commended Dr Hae for his quick response to his invitation. The Gambian leader was clearly impressed with  the diverse nature  of investments of MK International, announcing that The Gambia was interested in all the areas of investment presented.

He spoke at length about the prospect of investment in the country, citing its strategic location and proximity to Europe, South America and the sub-region, which, he said, gave the country an edge over many other countries in the West Africa region.

"One of the reason why I call you, is for you to be a strategic partner to our development  process because you have the technology and the capacity to work with us as development partner to the mutual interest of both sides", he said, and  he went on: "we want you to use Gambia as your headquarters in Africa.

We have a park that is redundant and we want you to make use of it.  We want you to build as many industrials parks as possible," the Gambian leader said, pointing out that as long as the country doesn’t start to manufacture and export, it could never be called  a developing nation .  He emphasized that industrialisation is very vital to the development of a nation.

" We want to transform the country based on our vision 2020 blueprint, which state that by that year the country must have achieved all what we  have aspired for.

We want a high  income economy, highly educated people and a viable financial sector, " Professor Jammeh emphasized, adding that the Gambia want to be an exemplary country that will be an economic power house in Africa.

Considering the size and location of the country, its conducive environment and the natural endowments, Jammeh believe that if more investment come to the Gambia, the county’s bid to become economic power house will be certainly achieved.

"There are resource poor countries that are major economies today such as Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, among others. They got developed  because they utilized their human resource and created the service sector that boosted their economy",  The Gambia leader observed, adding that  the Gambia was no exceptional  as being resource poor does not  mean  that you can be economically poor.

Jammeh further expressed satisfaction about the works of MK International, saying that going by the profile of the company, the firm can be the right partner to the Gambia’s development strives.

Speaking earlier, Dr Hae Jung Jung thanked President Jammeh for inviting him to the Gambia to explore business opportunities. He told the Gambian  leader that  his firm is operating in 39 countries in the world and 13 of which are in Africa. According to him, his company has an annual turn over of $3 billon dollars.

Commenting on the possible investment in the Gambia, Dr Hea revealed that they want to concentrate on housing development and industrialisation scheme which will ensure the setting up of manufacturing industrial parks, as well as transportation business.

The South Korean  investor hailed the conducive environment of the Gambia, describing it as  good for business. "I visited  a number of African countries, but The Gambia is very exceptional. It is very stable, peaceful, and has a friendly people which may accord foreign investors  confortability".

Dr Hea Jung Jung  then expressed his resolve to invest in the country for the acceleration of The Gambia’s development efforts. Lamin Bojang, the secretary of state for works, construction and infrastructure expressed satisfaction about the investments of MK International, saying that the company’s  areas of operation are of great interest to the Gambia.

Momodou Kotu Cham,  secretary of state for Forestry and Environment, and Ismaila Sambou, secretary of state for Local Government, Lands and Religious Affairs, all expressed satisfcation about the different portfolios of investments carried out by MK International.
