Re: President Jammeh calls for effective dispensation of Justice

Editor,

Kindly allow me space to add my support to the president’s reiterated calls for effective and sound dispensation of justice in the judicial sector. I am really happy for this call made by the president.

There are so many delayed cases in our court houses at this period, some cases have been dragging on for the past three years without any judgment and as the saying goes: justice delayed is justice denied. So I am appealing to our prosecutors to present there cases properly and avoid making mistakes that will give defense lawyers chances, because the defense lawyers only depend on the mistakes of the prosecutors in order to have a good defense for their clients. Also, charged sheets should be checked properly before being read by the prosecutors.

An example of a mistake made by a prosecutor is the recently concluded case which saw the jailing of a former National Assembly member and school coordinator. Everyone has seen the handing over ceremony on GRTS, and the money being handed over to the school coordinator. Instead of the school coordinator being the first accused, they put him as the second accused, which really confused the magistrate resulting in the delaying of the case.

Magistrates and judges should also try and finish cases they started and deal with anyone who tries to delay cases. Judgments should be based on facts and according to the law. Thank you Mr President for the call and may the Almighty Allah give you long life.
