The National Environmental Agency on Tuesday began its two day forum on climate change at the Atlantic Hotel in Banjul.  The forum which brought together senior government officials, members of the parliament, the private sector, NGOs and members of the general public is aimed at creating awareness of climate change as it relates to The Gambia.

In giving the opening remarks, the executive director of NEA,, Momodou B Sarr said the purpose of the forum is to sensitise policy makers and the mass media on the effects of climate change.

According to him, the scientific community is unanimous that no threat to the health of human beings and our environment is greater than that of climate change and as a result of that we must put pressure on the developed countries which have emitted and continue to emit the largest quantity of green house gases.

Deputising for the SoS for Forestry and Environment, the senior assistant secretary, Ebrima Darboe, in delivering his speech asserted that climate change is a national concern because of its expected impacts and the associate environmental risks.

He stated that the government of The Gambia under the leadership of Alhaji Professor Yahya Jammeh has made significant strides to combat climate change, as it has signed and ratified both the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.
