Information monitored by the Daily Observer has revealed that the Lower River Region Youth Parliament, under the National Youth Parliament of The Gambia (NYP), last Saturday elected Awa Ceesay as their first female speaker at a congress held in the Jarra Soma Mini-Stadium. Ceesay will represent the LRR parliament at the National Youth Parliament’s Executive Council.
Other elected members of the LRR parliament are Lamin Saidykhan - as deputy speaker; Saikou Darboe – clerk, to be assisted by Nanding Sanneh - deputy clerk. Yaya Sanneh was elected as the finance officer for the region.
In his statement at the congress, Bakary Dampha, Regional Education Directorate, Region Four, challenged the young parliamentarians to work together as a team for the realization of the aspirations of the parliament in the region and the country at large. He also called on the team to forge alliances with other stakeholders in the region.
Saikou Drammeh, the youth chairperson, Lower River Region Youth Committee, stressed that congresses form part of the development process of any organization. The National Youth Parliament and its grassroots bodies, he said, are not exempted. Awa Ceesay, the newly elected speaker, for her part, thanked the young people of the region for the trust and confidence bestowed on her. She called for cooperation for the betterment of all the young people of the region.
The National Youth Parliament, she said, stands for good morals and the inculcation of responsible behaviour in young people. This, she added, should guide all of them during their term in office.
