Journalist Training Underway

A three-day workshop on new writing methodologies in journalism began on    Monday at the Tango Resource Centre in Bakau New Town.

Organised by Media Agenda with funding from the UNESCO-NATCOM, Banjul office, the three-day training comprising 25 participants was meant to equip young journalists especially the beginners to better understand journalism ethics.

The training which is part of series of journalism training organised by Media Agenda, gathered participants from Media Agenda Journalist Students, Insight Certificate Journalist Training Programme, the Strafford College of Management, beginners from the Gambia Daily, Foroyaa, Farafenni FM Radio, Bwiam FM Radio, Gunjur FM Radio. Speaking at the opening, Madi MK Ceesay, the director of Media Agenda, urged the trainees to make good use of the training by putting into practice the lessons learnt during the course of the training.

Kebba K Barrow, who deputised for the director of Tango, said as young journalists, the training will really help them to be better equiped in their reporting. According to him, the role of journalists in society is very important noting that, journalists should also know the ethics of journalism - the guiding principles of their work. He further urged journalists to work with veteran Gambian journalists to help them understand journalism in The Gambia. He urged them to make good use of the training.

Cherno Jallow, a media consultant said in the 70’s, Gambian journalists used to travel to either Sierra Leone or Nigeria to attend such training. He then implored on the trainees to be proud in getting the training at their doorsteps.

“You need to train to become a good journalist not to be called a ‘join the list’. You do not need to hold a university degree to become a journalist but what you need is, to understand English and read to become a good journalist” he said. Meanwhile, during the course of the three-day training, the participants will be exposed to news writing  as well as research and news presentation.
