A group of Iranian businessmen yesterday attended a one-day business forum with their Gambian counterparts at the Jerma Beach Hotel in Kololi.

The forum, jointly organized by The Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and The Gambia Investment Promotion and Free Zones Agency (GIPFZA), was meant to enhance ties between business operators in both countries.

It was also designed to offer business operators the opportunity to get to know each and to build business partnerships. In his welcoming address, Abdou Kolley, the secretary of state for Trade Industry and Employment, thanked the Iranian delegation for finding time and interest to explore The Gambia’s business opportunities.

According to him, it will further cement the already cordial relationship that exists between the two countries. SoS Kolley further highlighted the importance that the government of The Gambia under the dynamic leadership of Professor Alhaji Yahya A JJ Jammeh attaches to the development of The Gambia’s business sector.

He added that earlier on, the government of The Gambia and the Iranian government had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). For his part, Bai Matarr Drammeh, the president of The Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), said The Gambia has always been respected in the sub-region for its liberal economic policies which have made it a distribution centre for goods coming from all over the world into the sub-region.

“Regional integration is fast becoming a reality and a small country like ours - with a remarkable track record in ease of doing business - is poised to become a production and distribution hub.

This mission from Iran comes as part of a bilateral agreement that was signed by the two countries. The MoU contains clauses that aim at facilitating trade and investment between our two brother countries,” he said.

Lamin Kabba Bajo, the Gambian ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran, thanked the Gambian leader, Professor Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh, for the importance his government attaches to the relation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and its commitment to the implementation of several agreements and the MoU signed by both parties.

Muhammed Rezazadeh Reza, the governor of Fars Province and head of the delegation thanked his Gambia counterparts for the warm welcome accorded to them.
