GTU organises cleansing exercise

In observance of its 72nd anniversary, The Gambia Teachers Union (GTU) in collaboration with the Regional Education Directorate, recently embarked on a cleansing exercise at the children’s ward of the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital.

Rohey A. Sillah, the vice president of the GTU, said  the cleansing exercise was in connection with their 72nd anniversary which they celebrate yearly, from 12th to 16th of February.  She then indicated that this year’s celebration will be marked by a strong commitment to clean the environment, as the occasion provided to the country’s teachers organisation the opportunity to clean the premises of the children’s ward of the RVTH.

According to her, they have made this choice due to the fact that the children’s ward is the right place. In addition, she said, the ward welcomes an important category of The Gambian population which constitutes the future of the nation.

She went further to thank the executive of the GTU, the Regional Education Directorate, and teachers who participated in the cleansing exercise. For his part, Pa Daniel Mendy, programme officer of the GTU, revealed that GTU was formed on the 9th of February 1937, so every year, he said, they celebrate this week and called it  ‘The teachers’ week’. “Basically, we  engage in this cleansing exercise as teachers organisation, bringing together teachers in this region, to clean the RVTH, which is a national property, to recognise their efforts. So, we do not only stop in the classroom, but also the welfare of the children,” he concluded.
