Ghana coach fires Gambia warning

The head coach of the Ghana Under 20 team, Sellas Tetteh, has warned his familiar opponents - the Gambia - that their thrilling 2-1 win over Guinea on Tuesday proves they have the character to win every match that comes their way in the on-going WAFU U-20 Championships currently holding in Nigeria.

Ghana have already qualified to the quarter-final stages after making it two wins in two games. After an opening 2-0 win over Senegal, the Ghanaians continue their unbeaten run by scoring a goal apiece in each half through Latif Salifu and Isaac Donkor to down Guinea 2-1.

The Black Satellites will face Gambia in the final group game on Thursday, and despite berthing a quarter-final spot, Coach Tetteh insists Ghana will go all out to beat Gambia tomorrow.

Gambia drew 1-1 with Guinea in their opening match before suffering a 0-2 defeat against Senegal. With only one point in the bag, the Darling Scorpions must beat Ghana and hope that the group’s other match between Senegal and Guinea goes their way in order to reach the last eight.

But if Coach Tetteh’s words are anything to go by, the Scorpions should start packing their belongings because the youth coach insists they are going all out tomorrow to win.

“Yes we have qualified but that does not mean that we will relax in our last group match against The Gambia. We are going all out to take the maximum points. Our ambition is to top the group so there is no room for turning back,” Tetteh told Observer Sports in a post         -match interview.

“Our two matches have been quite impressive although we did not end today’s game [against Guinea] very well. I think we might go very far in the competition.”

“I came here first of all to look at how my players will be performing and how well they will adapt to stronger oppositions and secondly to [give] an appreciable performance. Lastly, if an opportunity comes for us to lift the cup, then that will be a wonderful present," he concluded.

Ghana won the last Wafu Cup when it hosted and won a four-nation tournament in Accra in 2005. The Black Satellites beat Senegal 3-1 to lift the ultimate in the finals then.
