Gambi Cats a UK charitable organization which specializes in caring for stray cats and dogs in the hotel industry, last Thursday celebrated its 10 years of work in the Gambia at a colorful ceremony held at the Luigi’s Bar and Restaurant in Palma Rima.

In her welcoming address, one of the founders of the organization, Frances Miller, gave the overview of the organization noting that it started in 1998 in Kombo Beach Hotel and Fajara Hotel. She said she and her husband brought a team of 4 people including a vet. They spent a week catching and neutering cats within that area and it was very successful as a starting point.

Mrs Miller said they have started to extend their work to other parts of the country like Banjul and Abuko. She said among Gambi Cats’ future programmes are to look for more funding from individuals and organizations to be able to help those pet owners who may not be able to pay for a vet for their animals and try to find homes for unwanted young cats and dogs.

The programme manager for the organization, Dodou Bojang, thanked the Department of State for Livestock Services and other stakeholders whom he described as very supportive. He called on the general public to learn basic things about caring for dogs and cats, which he said will be very helpful.
