The Gambia National senior team, better known as the Scorpion will tomorrow march 12th against the Mauritanian national team in Nouakchott as part of the return leg of the 2009 qualifying round of the African Cup of Nations.
Saturday’s decisive match will determine the Gambia's continuous participation in the African football arena.
Conscious of the fact that defeat in Nouakchott will not turn in the Scorpions favour, the eighteen men squad, who left Banjul on Wednesday afternoon via Dakar, are optimistic of turning down the table against the hopeful Mauritanians.
Speaking to Observer Sports shortly before their departure, Lamin Sarr, assistant coach of the Scorpions, who was accompanied by the head coach Tarik, expressed optimism about the outcome of the match, noting that his boys are technically fit to defeat the Mauritanians.
"We have learned our weaknesses during the Banjul leg. In fact our boys did extremely well in Banjul, it was just that we were unable to materialise the numerous chances. As a coach, I have observed eleven clear chances during our first leg encounter which could have been materialized into goals", he said. He then called on Gambians to clear doubts and expect nothing less than a resounding victory.
